Abstract

This Internet-mediated research centred around the experiences of dance students in higher education as they moved through the intersection of online dance education and the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. Through interviews and semantic thematic analysis, key themes were identified in order to better understand how dancers engage with online educational material in meaningful, motivated, and embodied ways. Interpreted through a framework of Self-Determination Theory, the results indicated that dance students’ experiences of online dance education are informed by their access to resources, ability to continue learning, engagement with community, and sources of motivation. As online dance education becomes more common and as technology continues to facilitate remote learning, the results report upon effective ways for dance students to be motivated and supported in online training environments.
