Abstract

This master’s-level thesis by choreographer William Byram (he/him) is a critical documentation of the creative process of Letter to Man: A Nijinsky Project. Founded in poststructuralist philosophy, the process uses the canon of queer theory to recent debates in dance studies to deconstruct the legacy and afterlife of the infamous Ballets Russes dancer and choreographer Vaslav Nijinsky (1889-1950). This thesis documents the historiographic research that influenced the performative work that used choreographic methodologies such as reworkings of repertoire, as well as a verbatim process using the excerpts from Nijinsky’s diaries. Through care, empathy and rigour, Letter to Man is a collective celebration “of life, death, love and dancing”.
