Abstract

A Return to the Body: An Exploration of Embodied Reflection and Knowledge explores
somatic approaches to movement from practice towards performance. Based in
phenomenological and psychological frameworks, the research aims to return the field
of knowledge to the body by attending to sensation, reflecting on process, and sharing
experience through a witnessed output.

As a practical investigation, based in the four themes of practice that Martha Eddy
cites are shared across all somatic movement systems, this research offers a
subjective account on the uniting of self, perception, and sensation in the context of
dance practice.

Through theoretical and practical modes of inquiry, encompassing case studies,
participatory research, and solo investigation, I developed a movement practice that
relates embodied reflection towards embodied knowledge. Sharing my process
through the presentation of a structured solo entitled Root, I publicly comment on my
status with the research, acknowledging the availability for the work to further evolve.
