Abstract

I am introverted. I am a dancer. Introversion is prevalent within dancers and despite the negative connotations of this trait, it is neither better or worse than its counterpart of extroversion. This project explores the comprehension of introversion both theoretically and physically, resulting in an embodied experience.

Whilst the assumption can be made that there is a plethora of introverted types within various creative fields including dance, there are very few recollections or accounts to be found from prominent dance figures who identify as introverts, in the sense that they address that they are introverted and whether introversion has had any impact on their dancing. Additionally, although there is dance science research that explores personality traits and dance in the broad sense, there is little specific dance science research into dance and introversion. This investigation sets out to address this and explore introversion in its fullest.

Regarding this investigation as a combination of personal experience and a case study of participants that was a small and limited sample, I accept that one could argue that it cannot be used as an accurate reflection of the wider dance community. Despite this, I firmly believe that there is sufficient correlation in my findings to warrant a wider investigation of the subject matter.
