Once Upon a Dance: an autobiographical story on dance
Author: Sarah Hirsch
Course: MFA Dance Performance
Year: 2021
Storytelling often appears in creative processes involving choreographers, directors, and dancers. Once Upon a Dance by Sarah Hirsch underlines the difficulty in understanding how to combine the performer’s Story, intended as logic, with that of the choreographer in order to work effectively together. My research focuses particularly on the dancer’s perspective in said relationship. Physical workshops were held with a total of seven participants who agreed to being filmed and provided feedback in the form of questionnaires and discussions. The research concludes that it is necessary for each individual such as the author to approach a creative process with their individual Story. The creative relationship between dancers and choreographers is rendered easier if there is space for everyone to contribute their own Story to some degree. The research resulted in a danced piece that derived from the coming together of the author and other two dancers. Each dancer was able to contribute their own logic of movement, which was then linked to the others to come together as a single unique Story.
