Abstract

Caution, Reader.

This thesis seeks to combat lacking research and discourse surrounding the generation of fear – specifically through the mediums of dance and theatre for the consumption of theatrical presentation. Inspiration drawn from the fields of cinema, literature, philosophy, psychology, science, and haunted attraction management is explored.

Defined terminology as related to the generation of fear is presented and exhumed. This terminology is then discussed within a historical literary, cinematic, theatrical, and dance context, with examples from the turn of the century to present day dance and theatrical representations. Through a multi-phase investigation using a productas-process methodology, previous and current works are presented as “case studies.” Fear-inducing movement is analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively through Laban Movement Analysis. Assumptions are negated, astonishments experienced, and insights unearthed. Otherworldly entities are articulated. Finally, the execution of a global production in the midst of a global pandemic is elucidated and examined.

Contextualized by a fervent love for movement and a fascination with all things fearinducing (as defined and investigated herein), TOTAL FEAR is articulated, embodied, and even experienced.
