This qualitative and practice-led research study offers an exploration of the translation of spoken word to movement through the use of imagery. Imagery is captured in the form of drawings and/or writing that reflects one’s responses and mental representation formed by spoken word. This paper analyses the experiences of 3 participants over the course of 4 weeks and takes on a philosophical, psycho-physical and subjective perspective, allowing this notion to inform an experiential inquiry. During the research process, the participants were involved in translating their mental representation as visual images to assist them in conceptualizing and materializing their ideas and thoughts. The data revealed the participants’ views, perceptions and insights essential to better understand how imagery can be used as a tool in influencing the translation of spoken word to movement. The research process opened up possibilities and created multiple layers for one to play with, interpret and explore. In addition, this research study attempts to illuminate how individuals internalise, approach and embody mental representation, how our imagination and memories shape us, our thoughts, perceptions and ideas that consequently influence our artistic choices. Some works make visible an individual’s thought processes and immediate response to spoken word. Some create a delicacy that forces navigation and a deeper understanding of the translation, thus aiming to create a meaningful triadic relationship between spoken word, imagery and dance.
