Abstract

Begin in the Middle (Neither Me nor the Bucket)’ by Alice Gale-Feeny discusses the relationship between materiality and language in the context of a solo studio-based movement practice and group facilitation process involving objects, writing and speaking aloud. The practice leads towards a set of multi-modal performed, videobased and written ‘points of arrival’, for a black-box space and a white cube gallery. Presentation of the work in a gallery, informs a discussion on writing an acquisitions document.

The researcher draws upon theories from New Materialism, Posthumanism and Semiotics as well as perspectives from Contact Improvisation, contemporary art, dance and theatre to examine touch and boundaries in material and linguistic terms. ‘Recursion’ is used as a methodological framework to demonstrate a process of accumulation and recalibration with written and video-based material. The theoretical lens of auto-theory, as well as the use of objects brings the researcher closer to experiences of the personal, as well as the impact a global pandemic has on the location of the research and use of technology.

The research concludes with reflections on the performance ‘world’ that is created through the multiplicity of voices involved, including that of the audience. New places of arrival are outlined, suggesting the research continues to recalibrate.
