Abstract

This research explores how community dance, anti-oppressive practice, props and the
phenomenology of play with the use of Dance/Movement Therapy research could help trans
adults who experience dissociation to start dancing/ moving in a creative way to help them
feel connected to their bodies, their surroundings, and the people around them. The
research mentions the oppressive societal nature towards trans people and their experience
with dissociation. The participants reflections show the benefits of creative movement, props,
play and reflects on the power relationship in play. The findings prove the limitations of
research amongst trans and global majority people as well as having a strong need for more
for queer dance spaces. Additionally, I found the need to reassess the heteronormative lens
in dance. This work serves as a starting point for future projects in queering community
dance pedagogy.
